In industrial control and HMI/IPC design, the touchscreen bonding process is often overlooked as a trivial manufacturing step—yet it directly determines your product’s display clarity, durability, and long-term reliability in harsh factory environments. A wrong bonding choice can lead to crippling issues: unreadable screens under factory skylights, dust and moisture ingress, touch drift, and premature failure that costs thousands in downtime and maintenance.
At Reshine Display, we recently completed production of our new 7-inch fully bonded touchscreen assembly, engineered specifically for industrial HMI applications. After 16 years of manufacturing industrial displays, we've seen firsthand how the right bonding technology can make or break an HMI product’s performance. This guide breaks down the core differences between Air Bonding, OCA Optical Bonding, and LOCA (Liquid Optical Clear Adhesive) bonding, their pros and cons, and exactly which industrial applications each is best suited for.
Before comparing performance, it's critical to understand the fundamental differences in how these three technologies attach the cover glass, touch sensor, and LCD panel.
Air bonding is the oldest and most widely used low-cost bonding method. The process uses double-sided foam or acrylic tape to adhere only the edges of the cover glass/touch sensor to the LCD panel’s bezel. A 0.5-1.0mm air gap remains between the two active surfaces.
This "edge-only" bonding simplifies production and reduces material costs, but the air gap creates inherent optical and structural weaknesses that become problematic in industrial environments.
OCA optical bonding is the gold standard for industrial displays today. It uses a pre-cut, solid-state optical clear adhesive film with a refractive index nearly identical to glass (≈1.5). The film is laminated between the cover glass, touch sensor, and LCD panel under controlled pressure and temperature, completely eliminating the air gap.
The result is a single, monolithic display assembly with superior optical performance and mechanical strength. Our new 7-inch fully bonded touchscreen uses premium OCA material, achieving 92% total light transmittance and zero air gap defects.
LOCA bonding is a variation of optical bonding that uses liquid optical resin instead of solid OCA film. The liquid resin is dispensed onto the LCD panel, the cover glass is aligned on top, and the resin is cured with UV light to form a permanent bond.
LOCA offers better gap-filling capabilities than OCA, making it suitable for irregular surfaces or larger displays, but it requires more precise process control to avoid bubbles and uneven curing.

The table below compares the three bonding technologies across the most critical metrics for industrial control environments:
Performance Metric | Air Bonding | OCA Optical Bonding | LOCA Bonding |
Total Light Transmittance | 70-75% | 88-93% | 85-90% |
Surface Reflectivity | 15-20% | 4-6% | 5-7% |
Contrast Ratio (Sunlight) | 200:1 | 800:1 | 700:1 |
Dust/Moisture Resistance | IP54 max | IP65-IP67 | IP65-IP67 |
Vibration/Shock Resistance | Poor | Excellent | Very Good |
Operating Temperature Range | -10°C ~ 60°C | -30°C ~ 85°C | -25°C ~ 80°C |
Touch Accuracy | ±2mm | ±0.5mm | ±0.7mm |
Service Life (Industrial) | 2-3 years | 7-10 years | 6-8 years |
Initial Cost | Lowest | Highest | Medium |
●Air bonding fails in high-light, high-dust, or high-vibration industrial environments
●OCA optical bonding delivers the best all-around performance for harsh industrial conditions
●LOCA bonding offers a middle ground between cost and performance for specific applications
The optimal bonding choice depends entirely on your HMI’s operating environment and performance requirements.
●Air bonding is only recommended for low-demand indoor industrial applications where:
The HMI is installed in a climate-controlled, dust-free control room
No direct sunlight or bright overhead lighting is present
The product has a short lifecycle (≤3 years)
Cost is the absolute primary consideration
●Examples: Basic indoor control panels, low-volume prototype units, entry-level industrial PCs.
●OCA optical bonding is the non-negotiable choice for harsh industrial environments where:
The HMI is installed near factory skylights or semi-outdoor locations
The environment has high dust, moisture, or vibration levels
Long service life (≥5 years) is required
High touch accuracy and sunlight readability are critical
●Examples: Factory floor HMI panels, industrial PCs, CNC machine controllers, outdoor industrial control stations. Our 7-inch fully bonded touchscreen is specifically designed for these applications, with IP65 protection and -20°C ~ 70°C operating temperature range.
●LOCA bonding is best suited for specialized industrial applications where:
The display has an irregular or curved surface
Large-format displays (≥15 inches) are required
Gap-filling capabilities are needed for uneven components
●Examples: Curved HMI panels, large-format industrial kiosks, custom-shaped control interfaces.
The biggest mistake industrial manufacturers make is choosing air bonding to save upfront costs, only to face much higher long-term expenses. A $50 savings per unit on air bonding can lead to $500+ in replacement costs and thousands in production downtime when the screen fails prematurely.
Another common mistake is assuming all optical bonding is the same. Low-quality OCA material or poor lamination processes can result in bubbles, delamination, and yellowing over time. At Reshine Display, we use only premium industrial-grade OCA material and perform 100% quality inspection on every fully bonded assembly.
Whether you need a cost-effective air bonding solution for indoor applications or a high-performance OCA fully bonded touchscreen for harsh factory environments, Reshine Display has the expertise and capabilities to meet your needs.
