Optical Bonding

Optical bonding is a process used in the manufacturing of display devices, such as LCD (liquid crystal display) panels, to improve their visual performance and durability. It involves the application of a transparent adhesive material, typically an optical-grade resin or glue, between the display panel and the protective cover glass or touch sensor layer.

What is optical bonding?

Optical bonding is a process used in the manufacturing of display devices, such as LCD (liquid crystal display) panels, to improve their visual performance and durability. It involves the application of a transparent adhesive material, typically an optical-grade resin or glue, between the display panel and the protective cover glass or touch sensor layer.

Four advantages of Optical bonding:

l Enhanced optical performance: Optical bonding reduces reflection and refraction, improving contrast, color vibrancy, and image clarity. It reduces the internal reflections within the display, allowing more light to reach the viewer's eyes and improving readability, especially in bright environments.

l Increased durability: The bonding process creates a rigid structure by eliminating the air gap. This improves the mechanical strength of the display, making it more resistant to impact, vibrations, and moisture ingress. It reduces the risk of damage from physical stress and enhances the overall ruggedness of the device.

l Elimination of internal condensation: By removing the air gap, optical bonding helps prevent the accumulation of moisture or condensation inside the display assembly. This is particularly important in outdoor or high-humidity environments, where temperature and humidity variations can cause fogging or image distortion in non-bonded displays.

l Improved touch performance: When optical bonding is applied in conjunction with touch sensors, it can enhance the touch experience by reducing the parallax effect. Parallax refers to the misalignment between the touch input and the actual display content due to the separation between the layers. Optical bonding minimizes this effect, resulting in more accurate touch input and a better user experience.

l Optical bonding is commonly used in various applications, including smartphones, tablets, industrial displays, automotive displays, avionics, and outdoor signage. It is a popular technique to enhance the visual quality and durability of display devices, particularly those intended for demanding environments or outdoor use.
